ROCKY MOUNTAIN SECTION CAMP - Tantalus Range Tantalus Range, Coast Mountains, BC
This classic area for mountaineering and rock climbing is located in Tantalus Provincial Park and includes many magnificent peaks and glaciers, including Mount Serratus (2362m), Tantalus Peak (2603m), Mount Dione (2590m) and Alpha Mountain (2305m). By staying at the Jim Haberl hut we will be in easy striking distance of many routes in the area. DATES
MAXIMUM of 12 Participants each week. Please book early as the 2009 Summer Camp was FULL over 6 months prior to the camp!
The camp fees for the week will be $575 per person. The section camp is run on a break-even basis with all costs being shared equally amongst the participants. Please note that participants are required to pay their own costs for transportation to and from Squamish and any costs in Squamish such as lodging, meals, etc. REFERENCE MATERIALS
Alpine club members receive a 15% discount off maps and books purchased through the ACC National Office.
The geology here is mostly granite. The rock is generally very solid and provides exceptional opportunities for climbing and scrambling. There are many objectives in the area that vary from easy scrambles to snow & ice alpine routes to alpine rock routes. There is also potential for new routes. THE CAMP This camp is self-guided and self-catered so participants should have the requisite skills to contribute in every way to ensure a safe and successful camp. Please note that many approaches require snow and/or glacier travel and therefore a snow/ice course (or equivalent experience) is required. All participants will be required to contribute to the camp by taking responsibility for pre/post camp tasks, daily tasks and for leading rope trips/teams. There is NOT an ACMG guide on this camp. During the week, we will be staying at the Jim Haberl hut. This beautiful hut is located at 2073m in the Serratus-Dione col and has stunning views in every direction. You merely step out the door and you are already climbing in the alpine! This camp will be managed by John Peachell (week 1), Kris Irwin (week 2) and Sonja Findlater (week 3).
Squamish is about 1 hour from Vancouver and can be easily reached by bus or car. The most convenient airport is Vancouver International Airport. Pacific Coachlines – Skylynx run an airport shuttle that services Squamish (1-877-815-5084). Greyhound also runs a service through Squamish (604-898-3914). Plan to spend some time before or after the camp in Squamish and enjoy spectacular granite crack climbing. Other local activities include world-class mountain biking, hiking, fishing and kite-boarding. BOOKING To hold a spot you are required to (1) Fill out an application; and (2) pay a deposit of $175. This deposit is fully refundable up until May 1, 2010. At this date, the balance is due immediately or you will forfeit your spot and deposit. Following this date, deposit and/or entire fees are NOT refundable. I highly recommend purchasing travel/medical insurance through Travel Underwriters. They sell a variety of insurance policies, including medical (annual and single trip), trip cancellation/interruption and insurance. Every
year the Rocky Mountain Section offers its members the opportunity
to spend a week exploring mountaineering objectives with like-minded
people and build climbing partnerships that will hopefully last
beyond the end of the camp. The destination has been set for the
Tantalus Range, Coast Mountains, immediately NW of Squamish, BC.
This will be a fly in/fly out camp. We will be based out of the
beautiful Jim Haberl hut, located in the Serratus-Dione col (2073m.
We have an exclusive booking of the hut for the week.
