VANCOUVER ISLAND SECTION CAMP - Tlupana Range

ACC Vancouver Island Section 2010 Summer Camp Alvana Basin Tlupana Range:
Alava Basin NW of Gold River - about 5-6 hours driving one-way from Victoria, 3-5 hours from Nanaimo. The spectacular and pristine Tlupana Range is one of the least explored and most picturesque of all alpine areas on Vancouver Island. The climbing history of the range is in its infancy.  Most area first ascents have taken place in the 1990s. There are still several summits with no recorded ascents.  The climbing potential of this area is vast. A striking feature of the Tlupana Range is the low elevation of tree line which is as low as 3,000 ft. (Note: summits are typically 4,800-5,500 ft.) This gives the mountains in the range a character expected of much higher alpine peaks. The Tlupana Range is also one of the widest areas of alpine terrain on the island spanning with its main ridge stretching over 5km in width in some places. The rugged nature and difficult access complicate the logistics somewhat and it is unlikely to ever become a high use area.

Dates still open to Non Vancouver Island Section members July 31st through August 7th: To optimize the helicopter use, and reduce impact, there will be three one-week camps, each having 14 people. Saturday July 17 - 24, 24 - 31, and 31 - 7 Aug. ONLY THE THIRD WEEK STILL HAS PLACES AVAILABLE. Weight limit is 220 lb, including you and all your equipment. And yes, we'll be weighing you.

Camp details: The section has a Mountain Hardwear Space Station dome tent - 6m diameter, 3m height. There will be tables, chairs, cutlery, plates, etc as well as propane cookers, 2 outside biffies with bags (we fly out all waste) and a shower. You and a partner cook for 14 people on one night, and have 6 free gastronomic evenings. Day trips are organized the prior evening. Easy trips may not need a volunteer leader, but more challenging climbs and hikes will be led by one of the more experienced members attending. If you are a volunteer leader, you are encouraged to donate a couple of your days to guiding others who have less experience. There will be a sat phone for emergencies, and numerous handheld radios, so groups can call in during the day's activities.

What you bring: A detailed list will be circulated nearer the time, but you bring your own tent, sleeping gear, clothes, first aid kit, breakfasts & lunches, liquor and other vices.  Bring your own tent.

Cost  (est)  $350 per person: Covers 2-way helicopter flights, mess tent, tables, chairs and cooking equipment. Non- catered, non-guided camp. This is an extremely popular camp, so send your cheque as soon as possible, to hold a place.

Payable to "ACC-VI Section"  mail to Cedric Zala, 7776 Trentelmann Place, Saanichton, BC, V8M 1K9.  State “Week 3” on the back of the cheque. Section refund policy;- 100% refund is only possible if a replacement person is found. Cancel early, and there's a good chance you'll get your money back. Cancel late, and you may lose out.  For more information contact Cedric Zala.
